Sigiriya

A trip to this rock fortress is a must when visiting ceylon.

As you approach Sigiriya, you encounter the lush greenery and the majestic sight of the ancient rock fortress rising dramatically from the surrounding landscape. The journey to this UNESCO World Heritage Site is filled with anticipation as you imagine the history and grandeur awaiting you.

Upon entering the archaeological site, you’re enveloped by a sense of wonder as you learn about the rich history of Sigiriya, once a royal palace and fortress complex built by King Kasyapa in the 5th century. Walking along the well-maintained pathways, you marvel at the remnants of ancient gardens, ponds, and frescoes that adorn the rock face.

As you ascend the rock fortress, the view becomes more breathtaking with each step. The terrace gardens is good spot to rest before heading up. My dad stopped here while the rest of us went, and this is good spot to meet up again if someone in your party wants to take in the surroundings but not necessarily climb to the top.

Then comes the climb

You navigate through narrow staircases, fortified gates, and intricate water gardens, all while soaking in the panoramic vistas of the surrounding countryside.

Halfway through there is path to the right which is the path to the mirror wall and frescos.

If you want to avoid the summit and just voew the the frescoes you could take this shortcut if not this is the assigned exit for those coming down from the summit. We viewed the frescos on the way down.

Next up is the lion staircase

Then comes the narrow staircase

Reaching the summit, you stand in awe of the ruins of the palace complex, perched precariously atop the rock. From this vantage point, you can see for miles around, with lush forests, distant mountains, and rural villages painting a picturesque scene below.

The descent

The mirror wall is on the way down

Then comes the frescos which are not to be photographed. But amazing..

Tips

Start early and get there before the crowds. We got there by 7.00 am and the tourists ticket counter was open in the museum. Ticket prices are higher for tourists so if you do have a local in your party make sure they have their identification to get better rates.

By coming early you can avoid crowds on the narrow staircase and the heat.

Make sure to bring water and some snacks.
